National Windscreens helps bring Denise back to her full glory

Alt text not availableNational Windscreens has helped to bring a diesel shunter named Denise back to her full glory as part of a major restoration project carried out by the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.

The four-wheel diesel hydraulic shunter, built by Rolls-Royce/Sentinel of Shrewsbury in 1960, was donated to the Cornwall-based railway by her previous owners, Western Excavating (ECC) Ltd but needed a full revamp, including replacement glazing, before she could be returned to service.

This is where National Windscreens was able to help through its specialist glazing service that has already been called upon to replace windscreens on coaches, 80ft cranes and even pleasure boats.

Pete Marsden, managing director at National Windscreens, said: “As a company we pride ourselves on being able to replace glazing on virtually any means of transportation thanks to our specialist glazing division and locomotives are no exception.

“Our technicians all receive the best training possible, to a minimum of NVQ Level 2 in Automotive Glazing, and our glass supply network includes the biggest and most respected companies in the business, meaning we are always well prepared no matter how specialist the job is.

“Last year we helped to restore a locomotive shunter engine cab that is being used at Imerys’ Rocks clay quarry near St Austell, Cornwall, and I am delighted that we have now been able to play a part in bringing this grand old lady back to her full glory.

“I hope Denise brings much pleasure to passengers in the years to come as she takes pride of place on the railway again,” he added.

Sam Heather, the technician involved with Denise’s transformation, said: “I am delighted to have played a role in restoring Denise. Originally there were five diesel shunters in the ECC/Imerys fleet and they were all named after the girls in the office, the others being Susan, Annabel, Elaine and Sharon. It would be fascinating to know where her ‘sisters’ have ended up and whether our services will be needed again.”

National Windscreens’ specialist glazing team fits all types of glass to all kinds of vehicles, including plant & agricultural and bus & coach. To find out more please visit the website.
